bad things and good things...

On January 12,  Earth decided to shake of her back some 100.000 people... who knows, perhaps they itched... well, who am I to judge, she is big and when she decides to move there's not a lot that can be done against that... when I shake off my leg a little ant that climbed up as I lay on the beach, the little creature has nothing to say about it... So, that's more or less what happened in Haiti... thousands of people felt like that tiny helpless ant as the ground moved and the ceilings fell and in a moment everything turned into rumble... homes, lives...  the pain and the loss are immeasurable and I will not even begin to try and understand what all those people there are going through...

When I started this blog, I promised to write about good things... "better than shoes" things...  things that bring smiles... I am aware of the fact that talking about death and pain and loss does not fit the profile... But it is done on purpose. For two reasons: one is that we should never forget that at the same time that we live a happy life, at this exact time, many fellow human beings live a miserable one... and though we cannot help everyone and we cannot fix everything that is wrong on the planet, we still can do some things and help some people... and this, I see as an obligation.

The other reason is to comment on what I find remarkable... and this is the sensitivity that the human kind shows right now, right at this moment of tragedy... Which to me it shows that we are not hopeless as a species! Doctors and firemen volunteer to the rescue, people all over the world help to raise money to help Haiti, children are breaking their piggy banks, Hollywood stars are answering phones, musician get together and veteran athletes are playing football for the cause... the (what appears to be) whole human community is up and running to give whatever they can to help those who got hit by the disaster... and this is hope! This is a good sign for the human race... and it is better than shoes!

So, help along... nothing is too small a thing to do... no one knows what happens tomorrow and it might be us who need help next time...
